India’s 3.3 million km long road network is the second largest in the world. It comprises expressways, national and state highways, district, rural and other roads. The road network is crucial to the country as 65% of freight and 80% of passenger traffic is carried by road. The number of vehicles using these roads has been growing at over 10% per annum over the last five years.
Though National Highways constitute only around 2% of the road network, they carry about 40% of the total road traffic. With a view to improving connectivity and the safety of vehicular traffic in the country, the government is on a major highways and roads improvement and development effort.
